    The Gold Coast is situated in South-East Queensland, bordering NSW at it’s southern end in the popular border town of Coolangatta. It is a long thin strip running North/South from the hinterland mountains to the Sea.

Infrastructure

  • Transportation:
    The Gold Coast has a well-developed transportation network with buses, light rail, and taxis readily available. The Gold Coast Highway runs North/South parallel to the beach and only 1-2 streets back along most of the Gold Coast. There are frequest buses along this stretch and also the ‘light rail’ from Broadbeach to Southport and then Griffith University. Light rail is currently being extended south to the popular Burleigh Heads area.
    The main Motorway (M1) also runs North/South closer to the hinterland. The main rail line begins at Varsity Lakes and loosely runs parallel to the M1 all the way to Brisbane and beyond.

    • 1. Snapper Rocks:
      Famous for its consistent waves and hosting the WSL Championship tour international surfing competitions (formerly the Quiksilver Pro). Average water temperature: 22-24°C (72-75°F). This is an advanced level surf spot, not suitable for beginners.
    • 2. Burleigh Heads:
      Offers excellent point breaks suitable for surfers of all levels, with a vibrant beachfront atmosphere.
    • 3. Kirra Beach:
      Known for its hollow waves and long rides, particularly during summer cyclones, then autumn and winter months.
    • 4. Duranbah Beach (D-Bah):
      Located near the Tweed River mouth, it’s favored for its consistent swells and clean waves. This is an advanced level surf beach with strong rip currents not suitable for swimming or beginners.
    • 5. Coolangatta:
      A laid-back beach with consistent surf, perfect for both surfing and relaxing.

Best Surfing Conditions

  • Season:
    The best surfing conditions are typically during the summer (December to January) and winter months (June to August) when the swell is stronger. Then also during cyclone season around January/February large swells attract experienced surfers in big numbers.
  • Wave Quality:
    Most surf spots on the Gold Coast offer good quality waves year-round, with conditions varying based on weather patterns.
  • Water Temperature:
    Ranges from 19-27°C (66-81°F) throughout the year, providing comfortable conditions for surfing.
